- Currency: The currency is the Malaysian Ringgit (RM/MYR); cards are widely accepted in hotels, malls, restaurants and larger shops in Kuala Lumpur, Penang, Langkawi and the cities, but carry cash for hawker stalls, night markets, street food, small shops, temples and rural areas. ATMs are plentiful in towns and cities, and Langkawi is a duty-free island

Most food is halal or clearly marked; during the fasting month of Ramadan many Muslims fast by day, though hotels and tourist restaurants operate as normal
