FAQs

Vietnam Travel FAQs

Everything travellers usually ask us before booking a Vietnam holiday.

What is the best time to visit Vietnam?
Vietnam is long and narrow, so the weather varies by region. Broadly, February to April and August to October are the most comfortable months country-wide. The north is best from October to April, central Vietnam from February to May, and the south is pleasant from December to April.
How many days do I need for a Vietnam tour?
A week covers one region well, for example Hanoi, Halong Bay and Ninh Binh. Ten to twelve days lets you travel north to south taking in Hanoi, Hoi An and Ho Chi Minh City. Two weeks or more allows you to add the Mekong Delta, Sapa or Phu Quoc.
Do Indian citizens need a visa for Vietnam?
Yes. Most visitors, including Indian passport holders, need a visa. Vietnam offers an official e-visa that is applied for online before travel. Rules and validity change, so please confirm on the official Vietnamese immigration portal or ask our team and we will guide you through it.
Is Vietnam safe for tourists?
Vietnam is considered one of the safer destinations in Southeast Asia, with very low levels of violent crime. The main things to watch are petty theft in busy city areas and traffic when crossing the road. Normal travel precautions are enough.
How much does a Vietnam trip cost?
Vietnam is excellent value. A comfortable mid-range trip typically works out at a moderate daily budget covering hotels, transfers, guides and most meals. Our packages are priced per person and can be scaled up to luxury resorts or trimmed to a simpler style, so tell us your budget and we will build to it.
What is the currency in Vietnam and can I use cards?
The currency is the Vietnamese dong (VND). Cards are widely accepted in hotels, malls and larger restaurants, but carry cash for markets, street food, taxis and small towns. ATMs are plentiful in cities.
Is Halong Bay worth an overnight cruise?
Yes. A one-night cruise lets you see the bay at sunset and sunrise when the day boats have gone, and usually includes kayaking, cave visits and onboard meals. Two nights adds quieter areas such as Lan Ha Bay.
What should I pack for Vietnam?
Light breathable clothing, a rain jacket or compact umbrella, comfortable walking shoes, sunscreen and insect repellent. Bring a light layer for the northern highlands in winter, and modest clothing that covers shoulders and knees for temples and pagodas.
Is Vietnamese food suitable for vegetarians?
Very much so. Vietnamese cuisine uses a lot of fresh herbs, rice, noodles and vegetables, and Buddhist vegetarian restaurants (look for "com chay") are common. Do mention fish sauce, which is used widely, and we will brief your guide on your dietary needs.
Can I drink the tap water in Vietnam?
No. Drink bottled or filtered water. Ice in reputable hotels, cafes and restaurants is generally made from purified water and is fine.
What are the must-see places in Vietnam?
Hanoi Old Quarter, Halong Bay, Ninh Binh, Hue, Hoi An Ancient Town, the Ba Na Hills Golden Bridge, Ho Chi Minh City, the Cu Chi Tunnels and the Mekong Delta. Sapa and Phu Quoc are popular additions.
How do people get around Vietnam on a tour?
Domestic flights link the main hubs quickly and cheaply, while private air-conditioned cars with a driver handle regional sightseeing. Overnight trains and cruises are used on some routes. All transfers are arranged and included in our packages.
Is Vietnam good for families with children?
Yes. Distances are manageable with domestic flights, food is mild and rice-based, resorts in Da Nang and Phu Quoc are family-friendly, and activities such as cruising, cycling and lantern-making in Hoi An work well for children.
Do people speak English in Vietnam?
English is spoken in hotels, tourist areas and by guides, but less so in markets, taxis and rural areas. Our tours include English-speaking guides, and learning a few Vietnamese phrases is always appreciated.
Can you customise a Vietnam package for us?
Yes, that is what we do best. Every Vietnam itinerary we publish can be extended, shortened, upgraded or rebuilt from scratch around your dates, pace, budget and interests. Just send us your requirements and we will send a tailored quote.
