About the Trip

Fiji is the very picture of the South Pacific, more than three hundred islands scattered across a warm blue ocean, ringed by soft-coral reefs and home to some of the friendliest people on earth. This eight-day journey pairs the two sides of Fiji beautifully. You begin on the mainland's Coral Coast, where lush hills meet a fringing reef, immersing yourself in Fijian culture with village visits, kava ceremonies and a lovo feast, and exploring the Sigatoka River and coastal reefs. Then you cruise out to the Mamanuca Islands, a scattering of postcard-perfect islets ringed by white beaches and turquoise lagoons, for pure barefoot relaxation, snorkelling, and long lazy days by the sea. With the famous Fijian 'Bula' welcome, warm water year-round and a wonderful blend of culture and island bliss, it is the perfect introduction to Fiji, and a genuine escape into one of the most beautiful and welcoming corners of the Pacific.
Highlights

Trip Highlights

  • The Mamanuca Islands are the postcard image of Fiji, a scattering of small, palm-crowned islets ringed by dazzling white beaches and turquoise lagoons, just a short cruise from the mainland yet a world away. Each island has its own character, from tiny sandbars you can walk around in minutes to larger islands with lush interiors, but all share the same intoxicating blend of soft sand, warm clear water and swaying coconut palms. The snorkelling here is superb, with coral gardens alive with rainbow fish, reef sharks and turtles just off the beach, and the lagoons are warm, calm and impossibly clear, perfect for swimming, kayaking and paddleboarding.
  • Fijian culture is warm, welcoming and deeply rooted, and immersing yourself in it is one of the great joys of a visit. At its heart is the kava ceremony, a ritual sharing of a mildly earthy drink made from the ground root of the yaqona plant, offered to welcome guests and mark important occasions. Sitting cross-legged on a woven mat, clapping and calling 'bula' as the bowl is passed, you are drawn into a tradition that binds Fijian communities together. A visit to a traditional village, dressed respectfully in a sulu sarong, reveals a way of life centred on family.
  • The Coral Coast on Fiji's main island of Viti Levu is a beautiful and culturally rich stretch of shoreline, where lush green hills tumble down to a fringing reef and a string of villages, resorts and beaches. It offers the perfect base for exploring the mainland's culture and nature before heading out to the islands. Here you can snorkel and dive the fringing reef straight from the shore, visit traditional villages for a kava ceremony and meke, explore the Sigatoka Sand Dunes (Fiji's first national park) and the winding Sigatoka River, and discover the biodiverse Kula Eco Park or a spectacular garden.
  • The famous Fijian welcome is not a marketing slogan but a genuine, defining feature of the country, and it is what makes Fiji so beloved by those who visit. From the moment you arrive, greeted by beaming smiles and a booming chorus of 'Bula!' (hello, and a wish for good health and life), you feel the extraordinary warmth of the Fijian people. This is a culture of deep hospitality, where visitors are treated as honoured guests, children wave from village roadsides, resort staff remember your name and often serenade you with guitar and song, and strangers stop to chat with genuine friendliness.
  • The Sigatoka River and valley, the 'salad bowl of Fiji', offer a fascinating window onto the mainland's culture, agriculture and dramatic scenery. A jet-boat safari or riverboat cruise carries you up the wide, winding Sigatoka River, Fiji's second-longest, past fertile market gardens, plantations and traditional villages where life continues much as it has for generations. You stop at a riverside village for a warm welcome, a kava ceremony and a glimpse of daily life, and perhaps a meke performance, gaining a real sense of rural Fiji away from the resorts. Nearby, the Sigatoka Sand Dunes, Fiji's first national park.
  • Fiji's soft-coral reefs are among the finest in the world, earning the country its title as the 'soft coral capital of the world', and even the snorkelling on this journey offers a taste of their extraordinary beauty. Just off the beaches of the Coral Coast and the Mamanuca Islands, warm, clear water reveals coral gardens in a riot of colour, festooned with soft corals in pinks, purples and yellows that sway in the current, and alive with clouds of tropical fish, giant clams, reef sharks and turtles. The lagoons are warm and calm, ideal for snorkellers of every level.

Day by Day

A detailed day-by-day plan for this 8-day journey.

Day 1

Welcome to Fiji. Your flight touches down at Nadi, where you are greeted with a beaming 'Bula!' and a warm island welcome before being transferred along the scenic coast to your Coral Coast resort. As the lush green hills and fringing reef unfurl beside the road, the pace slows and the island magic takes hold. On arrival, settle into your beachfront resort and spend the rest of the day easing into Fiji time, swimming in the warm lagoon, strolling the sand and watching your first Pacific sunset. This evening, a relaxed welcome dinner of fresh island fish and tropical fruit introduces you to Fijian hospitality and cuisine. With nothing to do but unwind and the warmth of the welcome all around you, the cares of the outside world quickly melt away.

Day 2

Today you immerse yourself in the warm heart of Fijian culture with a visit to a traditional village on the Coral Coast. Dressed respectfully in a sulu sarong, you are welcomed by the community and presented to the chief, sharing a traditional kava ceremony, sitting cross-legged on a woven mat and clapping and calling 'bula' as the bowl is passed. You tour the village church and homes, learning about a way of life centred on family, faith and the land, and are treated to a spirited meke, a dance and song that tells stories of Fijian legend and history. A lovo feast, food slow-cooked in an underground earth oven, completes the experience. These encounters are genuine and heartfelt, and the warmth of the villagers leaves a deep impression, revealing the true spirit of Fiji beyond the beaches and resorts.

Day 3

A day exploring the natural and cultural riches of the Coral Coast. In the morning, a jet-boat or riverboat safari carries you up the wide, winding Sigatoka River, the 'salad bowl of Fiji', past fertile market gardens, plantations and traditional villages, stopping at a riverside community for a warm welcome and a glimpse of rural life. You might also visit the dramatic Sigatoka Sand Dunes, Fiji's first national park, with its ancient windblown dunes and sweeping ocean views. In the afternoon, the fringing reef awaits, and you can snorkel straight from the shore over coral gardens alive with rainbow fish, giant clams and, if you are lucky, a reef shark or turtle. This morning you transfer to Denarau Marina and board a catamaran for the scenic cruise out to the Mamanuca Islands, a scattering of postcard-perfect islets ringed by white beaches and turquoise lagoons. As the mainland recedes and the islands rise from the brilliant blue sea, the sense of arriving in paradise is complete. On reaching your island, you are welcomed with song and a fresh coconut and settled into your beachfront bure (bungalow), opening straight onto the sand. The rest of the day is yours to sink into island time, swimming in the warm, clear lagoon, snorkelling the coral off your beach, or simply lazing in a hammock as the palms sway overhead. Tiny, sleepy and unspoiled, the Mamanucas are the very picture of a tropical island, and as the sun sets in a blaze of colour, you settle in for pure barefoot relaxation.

The snorkelling here is superb, and you can drift straight off the beach over coral gardens alive with rainbow fish, giant clams, reef sharks and turtles, or join a boat trip to a pristine outer reef or a tiny deserted sandbar. Between swims, you might kayak or paddleboard the calm lagoon, take a village or cultural trip to a neighbouring island, or simply relax on the sand with a cocktail, watching the endless colours of the water. The pace is gloriously slow, and the beauty of the surroundings is intoxicating. As the afternoon fades, an optional sunset cruise glides across the lagoon with a drink in hand. It is the pure, barefoot island pleasure that draws travellers to Fiji, and the kind of day that recalibrates your idea of paradise.

You might take another snorkelling trip to the outer reef, try an optional dive, sail or jet-ski across the lagoon, join a Fijian cooking class or basket-weaving session, or take a scenic seaplane flight over the islands. Equally, you might do nothing more strenuous than move from hammock to sun lounger and back, cocktail in hand, watching the light shift across the water. On Sundays, a village church service reveals the Fijians' extraordinary hymn singing. Wherever the day takes you, the warmth of the welcome and the beauty of the surroundings make it hard to imagine anywhere more relaxing, and a farewell island dinner beneath the stars, perhaps another lovo feast, sends you off in the best of spirits, deeply rested and reluctant to leave.

Good to Know
  • Visa & entry: Most nationalities, including UK, US, EU, Canadian, Australian and New Zealand passport holders, receive a free visitor permit of up to four months on arrival; a passport valid for at least six months and onward travel are required. We confirm the exact requirement for your nationality
  • Currency: The currency is the Fijian Dollar; cards are accepted in the main resorts and towns, but carry cash for markets, villages, taxis and the smaller islands where facilities are limited. There is a small departure/environmental levy included in most air tickets
  • Best time to visit: The dry season (May to October) is the most popular, with warm, sunny days, lower humidity and calmer seas, ideal for the islands and diving; the wetter season (November to April) is hotter and more humid with tropical downpours, and falls within the South Pacific cyclone season
  • Getting around: Fiji's mainland Viti Levu is toured by road, while the Mamanuca and Yasawa islands are reached by catamaran, speedboat or scenic seaplane, and outer islands such as Taveuni by short flights; all transfers are arranged and included where specified, and island boat schedules set the rhythm
  • Village etiquette & culture: When visiting a Fijian village, modest dress is expected (a sulu sarong, covered shoulders, no hats), and it is customary to present a small gift of kava root and share a welcoming kava ceremony; your guide advises on the respectful protocol, which is part of the rich experience
  • Sundays & religion: Fiji is deeply Christian, and Sundays are quiet and reserved for church and family; attending a village church service to hear the extraordinary hymn singing is a moving highlight, and many businesses and some activities pause for the day
  • Reef & ocean: Bring reef-safe sunscreen, a rash vest and reef shoes; Fiji's soft-coral reefs are world-famous, but respect the coral, never stand on it, and heed local advice about currents and tides, especially around reef passages
  • Health & power: No vaccinations are required, drink bottled or treated water outside the main resorts, and pack insect repellent; tipping is not expected (many resorts have a staff Christmas fund instead). Power is 240V with Australian/New Zealand type I plugs, so bring an adapter
FAQs

Frequently Asked Questions

Should I combine the mainland with an island?

Yes — for a well-rounded first visit, we recommend pairing the mainland (the Coral Coast or Denarau) for culture, villages and nature with an island stay in the Mamanucas or Yasawas for pure beach relaxation. This gives you the best of both worlds, and this eight-day split is ideal; we can adjust the balance to suit you.

Which islands are best for a first visit?

The Mamanucas are the closest and easiest to reach from Nadi, with a wide range of resorts and beautiful beaches, making them ideal for a first visit. The Yasawas are slightly further and more rugged and remote, while outer islands like Taveuni are best for diving. We match the islands to your interests, budget and travel style.

What meals are included?

Daily breakfast is included, along with any meals named in the itinerary such as a welcome dinner, a lovo feast or an island barbecue lunch. Many island resorts also offer meal plans, which we can arrange, as dining options can be limited on smaller islands. Fiji's fresh fish, tropical fruit and Indo-Fijian curries are a delight, and we are happy to recommend the best.

Are boat and island transfers included?

Yes — the catamaran, speedboat or seaplane transfers between the mainland and the islands specified in your itinerary are arranged and included, along with all airport and resort transfers, so your island hopping is seamless. Island boats run to set schedules, which shape the day; we plan around them and advise on baggage limits.

Do I need a visa for Fiji?

Most nationalities receive a free visitor permit of up to four months on arrival, provided you have a passport valid for at least six months and proof of onward travel. We confirm the exact requirement for your nationality when you book, so there are no surprises on arrival.

When is the best time to visit Fiji?

The dry season from May to October is the most popular, with warm, sunny days, lower humidity and calmer seas, ideal for the islands and diving. The wetter season (November to April) is hotter and greener but more humid with downpours, and falls within the cyclone season. We advise on the best timing for your plans.

Is Fiji good for both honeymoons and families?

Wonderfully so — Fiji suits everyone, with romantic overwater and beachfront retreats, spectacular lagoons and seclusion for honeymooners, and dedicated kids' clubs, gentle beaches, snorkelling and famously warm island hospitality for families. Many resorts specialise in one or the other, and we match the islands and resorts to your travel style.

Can the itinerary be customised?

Absolutely. We can adjust which islands you visit and for how long, combine the mainland's culture and adventure with the Mamanuca and Yasawa islands or the diving of Taveuni, add a private-island retreat, and tailor everything to your interests and budget. Every itinerary is a starting point.
