The crossing offers fine views over the turquoise water, and on arrival you settle into your island hotel and explore the single sandy main street, humming with dive shops, colourful clapboard houses and relaxed bars. Flatter and more bohemian than its neighbours, Utila is famous both for its bargain diving and as a year-round hotspot for whale sharks. The rest of the day is yours to swim, snorkel and soak up the salty island atmosphere, ready for the marine wildlife encounters to come.

Today you head out in search of Utila's most magnificent residents, the whale sharks. A dedicated boat trip cruises the deep water offshore, watching for the surface boils where bait fish gather and these gentle, spotted giants come to feed. When conditions allow, you slip quietly into the blue to snorkel alongside the largest fish in the sea, an encounter of astonishing scale and grace. Sightings are seasonal and never guaranteed, but the experience, when it comes, is unforgettable.
