About the Trip
Trip Highlights
- The beautiful Lake District, with its shining lakes and a Windermere cruise, is a magnificent highlight. The Lake District, England's largest national park and a UNESCO World Heritage Site, is a landscape of ribbon lakes, soaring green fells, dry-stone walls and grazing sheep that has inspired poets and painters for centuries. You cruise on Windermere, the largest natural lake in England, gliding past wooded shores and grand houses with the fells rising all around, and take in beautiful Derwentwater, ringed by mountains near the pretty town of Keswick, and the tranquil waters of Ullswater or Grasmere.
- Literary landscapes, from Wordsworth's Grasmere to Beatrix Potter's Hill Top, are a charming highlight. The Lake District is one of the most inspiring literary landscapes in the world. You visit Grasmere, the beloved home of the poet William Wordsworth, seeing Dove Cottage where he wrote much of his finest verse, and his grave in the village churchyard, and perhaps tasting the famous Grasmere gingerbread. You explore the world of Beatrix Potter, creator of Peter Rabbit, at her farmhouse Hill Top and in the pretty village of Near Sawrey, and stroll picturesque Hawkshead.
- Fell walking above Derwentwater and Keswick is an exhilarating highlight of this journey. The fells of the Lake District offer some of the finest walking in Britain, for all abilities. You might climb the popular ridge of Catbells above shimmering Derwentwater, with its glorious views over lake and mountain, take an easier lakeside or valley walk, or, for the ambitious, tackle a stretch towards Helvellyn or even mighty Scafell Pike, the highest mountain in England. You walk amid heather, bracken and tumbling becks, past grazing Herdwick sheep, guided at a pace to suit your group, breathing the pure mountain air.
- The mountains of Snowdonia and the summit of Snowdon are a spectacular highlight. Snowdonia (Eryri) in North Wales is a magnificent national park of soaring peaks, deep valleys, glacial lakes and rushing rivers. Its crowning glory is Snowdon, Yr Wyddfa, the highest mountain in Wales, which you can conquer on foot by one of its dramatic paths or, more gently, aboard the historic Snowdon Mountain Railway, which climbs to the summit for breathtaking views over mountain and sea. You explore pretty Betws-y-Coed, nestled among wooded hills and waterfalls, and take on the thrilling ziplines and adventures of Zip World, home to the fastest zipline in the world.
- The mighty Welsh castles of Conwy and Caernarfon and fairytale Portmeirion are a magnificent highlight. Wales is the land of castles, and North Wales has some of the greatest in Europe. You explore mighty Caernarfon Castle, the magnificent fortress and walled town built by Edward the First, a UNESCO World Heritage Site and the place where the Prince of Wales is invested, and beautiful Conwy Castle, rising above its charming walled town and estuary. You wander the streets within their ancient walls, imagining the medieval world they guarded. You also visit fairytale Portmeirion, the whimsical Italianate village created on a wooded Welsh peninsula.
- Above all, this journey offers an active, beautiful family adventure through the Lakes and Wales. The Lake District and Wales are among the most beautiful and unspoiled corners of Britain, and this journey immerses you in them at an active, outdoorsy pace ideal for families. Over eight days you cruise Windermere and walk the Lakeland fells, explore literary Grasmere and Beatrix Potter's world, climb or ride up Snowdon, zip through the mountains of Zip World, visit the mighty castles of Caernarfon and Conwy, and end in lively Cardiff and the wild Brecon Beacons.

Know when to go.
- Visa & entry: Many nationalities (including the US, Canada, Australia and the EU) can visit the United Kingdom for tourism without a traditional visa, though most now need an Electronic Travel Authorisation (ETA) obtained online before travel; some nationalities require a Standard Visitor visa. A passport valid for the duration of your stay is required. Rules change, so we confirm the exact requirements for your nationality and help arrange the ETA or visa where needed
- Currency: The currency is the Pound Sterling (GBP), often written with the pound sign. Card and contactless payment are accepted almost everywhere, from taxis and buses to pubs, shops and cafes, and you can travel with very little cash; ATMs (cashpoints) are widespread. Scotland issues its own banknotes, which are valid throughout the UK
- Best time to visit: May, June and September offer the best balance of long days, gardens in bloom or autumn colour, and lighter crowds; July and August are the warmest and busiest, ideal for the Highlands and coast. Spring and autumn are lovely for cities and countryside, while December brings festive markets, lights and cosy pubs. Pack layers and a waterproof in any season, as the weather is famously changeable
- Language & etiquette: English is the language, though you will hear Welsh in Wales, Gaelic in parts of Scotland, and a wonderful variety of regional accents. The British value politeness, queuing (never jump a queue), please and thank you, and a certain reserve that quickly warms; tipping around 10 to 12.5 per cent in restaurants is customary if service is not already added
- Getting around: Britain is compact and superbly connected by fast, scenic trains, comfortable coaches and, where you wish, private driver-guides; we arrange the smoothest mix for your journey. Remember that traffic drives on the left, city centres are best explored on foot, and London's Underground, buses and black cabs make the capital easy to navigate with a contactless card
- Health & safety: The UK is a safe, stable and welcoming destination with excellent standards; normal city common sense applies in busy areas and on public transport. Tap water is safe to drink everywhere, pharmacies (chemists) are widely available, and the emergency number is 999 (or 112). Travel insurance is strongly recommended, as visitors are not entitled to free non-emergency NHS care
- Culture & customs: Britain is a land of deep history and living tradition, from royal ceremony and centuries-old universities to village pubs, cream teas and Sunday roasts. Cathedrals, castles and stately homes ask for quiet respect and sometimes modest dress; many gardens and grand houses are run by the National Trust or English Heritage. Pubs are the warm heart of social life and welcome families in daytime
- Power & practicalities: Power is 230V with UK-style three-pin type G plugs, so bring an adapter for other devices. Shops and attractions generally open daily, with shorter Sunday hours; museums in London and many national museums are free. The afternoon-tea and pub-lunch culture is a delight, and booking ahead for popular restaurants, West End shows and major attractions is wise in peak season
Frequently Asked Questions
Is this journey suitable for families with children?
Very much so. This active, outdoorsy journey is designed to delight families, with a Windermere cruise, the world of Beatrix Potter and Peter Rabbit, gentle and more challenging fell walks, the exciting Snowdon Mountain Railway, and the ziplines and adventure playgrounds of Zip World, alongside mighty castles that fire young imaginations. We tailor the pace and choice of activities to your family's ages and interests, offering easier options alongside the more adventurous, so everyone from grandparents to grandchildren can enjoy the fresh air and adventure together.
How much walking is involved, and do I need to be very fit?
There is a good deal of optional walking, but it is flexible and tailored to your group. On fell-walking day you can choose an easy lakeside stroll, a moderate ridge such as Catbells, or a more ambitious climb, and Snowdon can be conquered on foot or, far more gently, by the mountain railway. A reasonable level of fitness and good waterproof footwear will help you get the most from the mountains, but we always provide gentler alternatives so no one need feel left out.
What meals are included?
Daily breakfast is included, typically a hearty full English (or Scottish or Welsh) cooked breakfast or a generous continental buffet, along with any meals named in the itinerary, such as a welcome dinner, a traditional afternoon tea or a pub supper. We usually leave other meals free so you can enjoy Britain's wonderful and varied food scene, from historic gastropubs and Sunday roasts to fresh seafood, curry houses and fine dining, and we are delighted to recommend the best places at every stage of your journey.
Are the tours private or in a group?
Your journey is private by default, with your own expert local guide and comfortable vehicle or first-class rail seats, giving you flexibility, depth and a pace tailored to you; relaxed small-group options can be arranged if you prefer. Britain's knowledgeable, entertaining guides bring the castles, cathedrals, royal history, universities and landscapes vividly to life, and can tailor each day to your interests, whether history, gardens, literature, film locations or simply a good country pub.
Do I need a visa for the United Kingdom?
Many nationalities can visit for tourism without a traditional visa but now need an Electronic Travel Authorisation (ETA) obtained online before travel, while some nationalities require a Standard Visitor visa. We confirm the exact, current requirements for your nationality, advise on the best option, and help arrange the ETA or visa where needed, so entry is smooth. A passport valid for the duration of your stay is required.
Is the United Kingdom safe to visit?
The UK is one of the safest, most stable and most welcoming countries in the world, with excellent infrastructure, healthcare and standards of service. Normal city common sense applies in busy areas and on public transport, tap water is safe everywhere, and the emergency number is 999. We continuously monitor conditions, use trusted local guides and drivers, and follow official guidance, so you can relax and enjoy your journey with complete confidence.
When is the best time to visit?
May, June and September offer the best balance of long, often sunny days, gardens in bloom or autumn colour, and lighter crowds; July and August are the warmest and busiest, wonderful for the Highlands, Lake District and coast. Spring and autumn are lovely for cities, castles and countryside, while December brings festive markets, twinkling lights and cosy firelit pubs. We advise on the best timing for your interests and the regions you wish to see.
Can the itinerary be customised?
Absolutely. We can adjust the balance of London, the Cotswolds, Bath, Oxford and Cambridge, Scotland and the Highlands, the Lake District, Wales and Cornwall, add castles, gardens, distilleries, literary and film locations or a West End show, upgrade to luxury hotels and country houses, and tailor the pace, comfort and focus to you. Every itinerary is a flexible starting point for your ideal journey through the history, cities and beautiful landscapes of Britain.
