Highlights

Trip Highlights

  • Edinburgh, Scotland's magnificent capital, is a spectacular start to this journey. Built across volcanic hills between the medieval Old Town and the elegant Georgian New Town, it is one of Europe's most beautiful and dramatic cities. You climb to Edinburgh Castle, perched on its ancient crag high above the city, home to the Scottish crown jewels and the Stone of Destiny, and walk the historic Royal Mile down to the Palace of Holyroodhouse, the monarch's official residence in Scotland. You wander closes and wynds steeped in centuries of history, take in the sweeping views from Calton Hill, and for the energetic climb Arthur's Seat.
  • Legendary Loch Ness and the ruined Urquhart Castle are an atmospheric highlight of this journey. Deep, dark and mysterious, Loch Ness stretches for miles through the Great Glen, holding more fresh water than all the lakes of England and Wales combined, and famous the world over for its elusive monster, Nessie. You cruise or drive along its wooded shores, gazing into the peaty depths where the legend was born, and explore the romantic ruins of Urquhart Castle, dramatically set on a headland above the water, once one of the largest strongholds in Scotland and fought over for centuries.
  • The spectacular Isle of Skye, with its mountains, sea cliffs and fairy landscapes, is a breathtaking highlight. Skye, the largest and most beautiful of the Inner Hebrides, is a world of jagged peaks, sea lochs, dramatic cliffs and otherworldly rock formations, reached across the bridge or beneath the gaze of picture-perfect Eilean Donan Castle. You take in the towering Cuillin mountains, the strange pinnacle of the Old Man of Storr, the extraordinary folded ridges of the Quiraing, and the clear cascading pools of the Fairy Pools at the foot of the Black Cuillin.
  • Dramatic Glencoe and Fort William beneath Ben Nevis are a spectacular Highland highlight. The glen of Glencoe is one of the most beautiful and haunting places in Scotland, a deep valley walled by soaring peaks and streaked with waterfalls, steeped in the tragic history of the 1692 massacre and beloved of walkers and film-makers alike. You drive through its awe-inspiring scenery, then reach Fort William, the outdoor capital of the Highlands, set beneath Ben Nevis, the highest mountain in Britain. Nearby, the graceful Glenfinnan viaduct curves across the hillside, made famous by the Jacobite steam train and the Hogwarts Express.
  • A Highland single malt distillery and genuine Scottish hospitality are a delightful highlight. Scotland is the home of whisky, the water of life, and no journey through the Highlands is complete without visiting a distillery to see how the golden single malt is made, from malted barley and pure Highland water to the copper stills and the long, patient years in oak casks. You take a guided tour of a classic distillery, learning the craft and history, and enjoy a tasting of smooth, smoky or honeyed drams. Along the way you meet warm, witty Highlanders, hear tales in a firelit pub.
  • Above all, this journey offers the romance, drama and beauty of Scotland, from Edinburgh to Skye. Scotland is one of the most beautiful and romantic countries in the world, and this journey takes in the very best. Over nine days you explore magnificent Edinburgh, journey north through Stirling and the Cairngorms to Loch Ness and Culloden, cross to the spectacular Isle of Skye, travel through dramatic Glencoe and Fort William beneath Ben Nevis, taste a Highland malt, and end in vibrant Glasgow, all guided by expert local guides and warmed by genuine Scottish hospitality.

Good to Know
  • Visa & entry: Many nationalities (including the US, Canada, Australia and the EU) can visit the United Kingdom for tourism without a traditional visa, though most now need an Electronic Travel Authorisation (ETA) obtained online before travel; some nationalities require a Standard Visitor visa. A passport valid for the duration of your stay is required. Rules change, so we confirm the exact requirements for your nationality and help arrange the ETA or visa where needed
  • Currency: The currency is the Pound Sterling (GBP), often written with the pound sign. Card and contactless payment are accepted almost everywhere, from taxis and buses to pubs, shops and cafes, and you can travel with very little cash; ATMs (cashpoints) are widespread. Scotland issues its own banknotes, which are valid throughout the UK
  • Best time to visit: May, June and September offer the best balance of long days, gardens in bloom or autumn colour, and lighter crowds; July and August are the warmest and busiest, ideal for the Highlands and coast. Spring and autumn are lovely for cities and countryside, while December brings festive markets, lights and cosy pubs. Pack layers and a waterproof in any season, as the weather is famously changeable
  • Language & etiquette: English is the language, though you will hear Welsh in Wales, Gaelic in parts of Scotland, and a wonderful variety of regional accents. The British value politeness, queuing (never jump a queue), please and thank you, and a certain reserve that quickly warms; tipping around 10 to 12.5 per cent in restaurants is customary if service is not already added
  • Getting around: Britain is compact and superbly connected by fast, scenic trains, comfortable coaches and, where you wish, private driver-guides; we arrange the smoothest mix for your journey. Remember that traffic drives on the left, city centres are best explored on foot, and London's Underground, buses and black cabs make the capital easy to navigate with a contactless card
  • Health & safety: The UK is a safe, stable and welcoming destination with excellent standards; normal city common sense applies in busy areas and on public transport. Tap water is safe to drink everywhere, pharmacies (chemists) are widely available, and the emergency number is 999 (or 112). Travel insurance is strongly recommended, as visitors are not entitled to free non-emergency NHS care
  • Culture & customs: Britain is a land of deep history and living tradition, from royal ceremony and centuries-old universities to village pubs, cream teas and Sunday roasts. Cathedrals, castles and stately homes ask for quiet respect and sometimes modest dress; many gardens and grand houses are run by the National Trust or English Heritage. Pubs are the warm heart of social life and welcome families in daytime
  • Power & practicalities: Power is 230V with UK-style three-pin type G plugs, so bring an adapter for other devices. Shops and attractions generally open daily, with shorter Sunday hours; museums in London and many national museums are free. The afternoon-tea and pub-lunch culture is a delight, and booking ahead for popular restaurants, West End shows and major attractions is wise in peak season
FAQs

Frequently Asked Questions

How much walking does this Scotland journey involve?

There is a comfortable amount of gentle walking, exploring castles, the Royal Mile, Loch Ness shores and the viewpoints of Skye, all at a relaxed pace suited to most fitness levels. For the more energetic there are optional longer walks, such as up Arthur's Seat in Edinburgh, to the Old Man of Storr or into the Quiraing on Skye, or towards Ben Nevis, and we tailor each day to your interests and abilities. Good waterproof footwear and a rain jacket are essential, as Highland weather is famously changeable.

Will I really see the Loch Ness monster?

We cannot promise Nessie will appear, though generations of visitors have kept watch on those dark, mysterious waters. What we can promise is a wonderful day exploring legendary Loch Ness, a cruise on the loch, the romantic ruins of Urquhart Castle on its headland, and the moving story of the monster and the Great Glen. Whether or not Nessie makes an appearance, the beauty, atmosphere and history of Loch Ness make it an unforgettable highlight of any Scottish journey.

What meals are included?

Daily breakfast is included, typically a hearty full English (or Scottish or Welsh) cooked breakfast or a generous continental buffet, along with any meals named in the itinerary, such as a welcome dinner, a traditional afternoon tea or a pub supper. We usually leave other meals free so you can enjoy Britain's wonderful and varied food scene, from historic gastropubs and Sunday roasts to fresh seafood, curry houses and fine dining, and we are delighted to recommend the best places at every stage of your journey.

Are the tours private or in a group?

Your journey is private by default, with your own expert local guide and comfortable vehicle or first-class rail seats, giving you flexibility, depth and a pace tailored to you; relaxed small-group options can be arranged if you prefer. Britain's knowledgeable, entertaining guides bring the castles, cathedrals, royal history, universities and landscapes vividly to life, and can tailor each day to your interests, whether history, gardens, literature, film locations or simply a good country pub.

Do I need a visa for the United Kingdom?

Many nationalities can visit for tourism without a traditional visa but now need an Electronic Travel Authorisation (ETA) obtained online before travel, while some nationalities require a Standard Visitor visa. We confirm the exact, current requirements for your nationality, advise on the best option, and help arrange the ETA or visa where needed, so entry is smooth. A passport valid for the duration of your stay is required.

Is the United Kingdom safe to visit?

The UK is one of the safest, most stable and most welcoming countries in the world, with excellent infrastructure, healthcare and standards of service. Normal city common sense applies in busy areas and on public transport, tap water is safe everywhere, and the emergency number is 999. We continuously monitor conditions, use trusted local guides and drivers, and follow official guidance, so you can relax and enjoy your journey with complete confidence.

When is the best time to visit?

May, June and September offer the best balance of long, often sunny days, gardens in bloom or autumn colour, and lighter crowds; July and August are the warmest and busiest, wonderful for the Highlands, Lake District and coast. Spring and autumn are lovely for cities, castles and countryside, while December brings festive markets, twinkling lights and cosy firelit pubs. We advise on the best timing for your interests and the regions you wish to see.

Can the itinerary be customised?

Absolutely. We can adjust the balance of London, the Cotswolds, Bath, Oxford and Cambridge, Scotland and the Highlands, the Lake District, Wales and Cornwall, add castles, gardens, distilleries, literary and film locations or a West End show, upgrade to luxury hotels and country houses, and tailor the pace, comfort and focus to you. Every itinerary is a flexible starting point for your ideal journey through the history, cities and beautiful landscapes of Britain.
