Highlights

Trip Highlights

  • Palau's warm, calm, crystal-clear lagoons and coral gardens are a dream for families, offering safe, gentle snorkelling where children can discover a whole underwater world teeming with life. In the sheltered lagoons of the Rock Islands, the water is warm and clear, and just below the surface lie vibrant coral gardens alive with clouds of rainbow fish, giant clams with iridescent lips, turtles, reef sharks and countless other creatures, among the healthiest and most abundant marine life on earth. The snorkelling is gentle and accessible, ideal for children to learn and gain confidence under a parent's watchful eye.
  • Swimming among the millions of golden jellyfish of Jellyfish Lake is one of the most magical and wondrous experiences a child can have, and a highlight of any Palau family adventure. Hidden in the heart of a Rock Island, this marine lake is home to millions of harmless golden jellyfish that have evolved to lose their sting, and which migrate across the lake each day following the sun. Snorkelling among them, children glide through a living galaxy of gently pulsing golden bells, thousands of them drifting all around, brushing softly and harmlessly against their skin, an utterly unique, dreamlike and unforgettable experience that leaves kids wide-eyed with wonder.
  • The labyrinthine Rock Islands offer endless adventure and discovery for families, a surreal maze of jungle-clad islands, hidden lagoons, sea caves and deserted beaches to explore together. Cruising among the emerald, mushroom-shaped islets by boat is an adventure in itself, and children love landing on deserted white-sand beaches, such as Long Beach, a stunning sandbar that magically appears at low tide, to swim, snorkel and play with the turquoise lagoon all around. You can paddle kayaks into hidden channels and sea caves accessible only by small boat, float in the milky, dreamlike Milky Way lagoon (and enjoy the mud.
  • Palau's abundant and approachable marine life, protected by the nation's world-leading conservation, brings the family adventure vividly to life, with frequent, thrilling encounters that enchant children. In the warm, clear lagoons and reefs, children can snorkel with green turtles gliding serenely over the coral, spot reef sharks (harmless and beautiful) patrolling the reef, marvel at the huge, iridescent giant clams of Clam City, and watch clouds of rainbow fish, all in astonishing abundance. Palau lies at the heart of the Coral Triangle, the global centre of marine biodiversity, and its reefs, kept pristine by conservation, teem with more life than almost anywhere on earth.
  • Palau's world-leading conservation ethos and the 'Palau Pledge' offer children a powerful, hands-on lesson in caring for the environment, adding a meaningful and inspiring dimension to the family adventure. On arrival, every visitor, including children, signs the famous 'Palau Pledge', an environmental promise stamped in the passport, vowing to tread lightly and protect the islands, a memorable and thought-provoking introduction to a nation devoted to safeguarding its precious natural heritage. Throughout the journey, children see and learn about Palau's pioneering conservation, its marine sanctuaries, its ban on reef-toxic sunscreens (the family uses reef-safe sunscreen), its protection of sharks and reefs.
  • Kayaking the hidden lagoons and beaches of the Rock Islands is a wonderful family adventure, letting children explore the labyrinth of islands at a gentle, hands-on pace. Paddling kayaks, families glide silently into the Rock Islands' hidden channels, secret marine lakes and mangrove-fringed lagoons, where the water is mirror-calm and the only sounds are birdsong and the dip of the paddles, an exciting sense of exploration for children. You can paddle into sea caves and hidden coves accessible only by kayak, past ancient rock art, and land on deserted white-sand beaches for a swim and a picnic, a real treasure-island adventure.

Good to Know
  • Visa & entry: Most nationalities, including UK, US, EU, Canadian, Australian and New Zealand passport holders, receive a free visa on arrival of up to 30 days; a passport valid for at least six months and onward travel are required. On arrival you sign the 'Palau Pledge', an environmental promise stamped in your passport. We confirm details for your nationality
  • Currency: Palau uses the US Dollar; cards are accepted in the main hotels, dive shops and restaurants in Koror, but carry cash for smaller vendors and tips. A Rock Islands permit and, where visited, a Jellyfish Lake permit are required (included where specified), and a departure/environmental fee applies, usually included in air tickets
  • Best time to visit: Palau is warm and tropical year-round; the drier months (roughly November to May, especially February to April) offer the sunniest weather and calmest seas, while June to October is wetter, though diving is excellent all year. The water is warm throughout, ideal for diving and snorkelling
  • Conservation & reef-safe sunscreen: Palau is a world leader in marine conservation, and reef-toxic sunscreens are banned by law; you must use reef-safe, mineral sunscreen, which we advise on. Never touch or stand on coral or marine life, follow your guide's rules, and help protect this pristine environment
  • Diving & snorkelling: Palau is one of the world's premier diving destinations, with strong currents at famous sites like Blue Corner; some dives suit experienced divers, and reef hooks are used in current. Snorkelling is superb and gentle in the Rock Islands lagoons and Jellyfish Lake; we tailor activities to your ability
  • Getting around: Palau is compact, and most touring is by boat from Koror to the Rock Islands and dive sites; the main island of Babeldaob is explored by road. All boat and land transfers specified are arranged and included, and days on the water are the heart of a Palau trip
  • Health & jellyfish: No vaccinations are required, tap water is generally safe in Koror, and travel insurance (with diving cover if needed) is essential. The golden jellyfish of Jellyfish Lake are harmless, with a sting too mild to feel; we advise on all safety and etiquette
  • Power & culture: Power is 120V with US-style type A and B plugs, so US travellers need no adapter. English and Palauan are widely spoken, and respectful behaviour is expected when visiting villages and cultural sites
