About the Trip

This eight-day adventure pairs the two great thrills of Uganda, the profound, heart-stopping encounter with wild mountain gorillas in Bwindi Impenetrable National Park, and the pure adrenaline of whitewater rafting on the source of the mighty Nile at Jinja. You fly southwest to the ancient, misty rainforest of Bwindi, home to almost half the world's mountain gorillas, for an unforgettable trek and a magical hour with a gorilla family. You wind back through zebra country at Lake Mburo, then journey east to Jinja, the adventure capital of East Africa, set where the world's longest river begins its journey out of Lake Victoria. Here you raft thundering Grade V rapids, kayak, quad-bike or bungee over the Nile, and cruise to the historic source itself. Guided throughout by expert driver-guides and river teams and warmed by Ugandan hospitality, this is the ultimate adventure through the Pearl of Africa, combining the wild forest and the wild river in one exhilarating journey.
Highlights

Trip Highlights

  • Meeting a wild mountain gorilla family in the ancient forest of Bwindi is the profound heart of this adventure. Bwindi Impenetrable National Park is a vast, mist-wrapped rainforest sheltering almost half of all the mountain gorillas left on Earth. After an early briefing, you set off with a ranger and trackers into the dense, dripping forest, climbing tangled slopes until you reach a habituated gorilla family, then spend a breathless, closely regulated hour in their presence, watching a mighty silverback rest, mothers cradle infants and youngsters tumble and play just metres away. After the rush of the river, this quiet, profound encounter moves you to the core.
  • Whitewater rafting the thundering rapids of the Nile at Jinja is a heart-pounding highlight of this adventure. Jinja, set where the world's longest river surges out of Lake Victoria, is the adventure capital of East Africa, and its stretch of the White Nile offers some of the finest whitewater rafting on the planet. With expert river guides and safety kayakers, you plunge through a series of huge, roaring rapids, some up to Grade V, riding walls of white water, spinning through churning holes and whooping through the wild ride, with calmer stretches between to float, swim and take in the lush riverbanks and birdlife.
  • Cruising to the historic source of the Nile at Jinja is a fascinating and beautiful highlight of this journey. At Jinja, the White Nile begins its epic four-thousand-mile journey to the Mediterranean, flowing out of Lake Victoria, and a gentle boat cruise to the source is a wonderful contrast to the adrenaline of the rapids. Gliding across the calm, wide water where lake becomes river, you see the spot long sought by nineteenth-century explorers, watch fishermen, cormorants and kingfishers, and feel the significance of standing at the beginning of the world's longest river. Sunset cruises here are especially beautiful, with the sky glowing over the water.
  • A wealth of Jinja adventures, from kayaking and quad-biking to bungee over the Nile, adds pure thrill to this journey. Beyond rafting, Jinja is a playground for the adventurous, and you can fill your days with an exhilarating choice of activities on and around the Nile. You might learn to kayak on calmer stretches, quad-bike or mountain-bike through riverside villages and countryside, take a stand-up paddleboard onto the water, ride a jet boat, or take the plunge on the bungee jump that swings out high over the river. There are also gentler options, from riverside horse riding to craft markets and coffee tours.
  • A gentle interlude of zebra and lakes at Lake Mburo balances the adventure with beauty and calm. Between the wild forest of Bwindi and the wild river at Jinja, compact, scenic Lake Mburo National Park offers a peaceful, wildlife-rich pause. Because there are no lions or elephants here, you can explore on foot with an armed ranger, walking among grazing zebra, impala, topi and eland, and you can glide out on the lake by boat past hippos, crocodiles and abundant water birds, with the chance of the shy sitatunga antelope. Rolling acacia savanna and shining water make it a beautiful, restful contrast.
  • Above all, this journey unites Uganda's two greatest thrills, the wild gorillas and the wild Nile, in one exhilarating adventure. For the traveller who wants both the profound and the adrenaline-charged, this eight-day itinerary is ideal, pairing the heart-stopping encounter with mountain gorillas in the misty forest of Bwindi with the roaring whitewater and endless adventures of the source of the Nile at Jinja, and adding the peaceful zebra country of Lake Mburo. Guided throughout by expert driver-guides and river teams and warmed by Ugandan hospitality, it delivers the full range of what the Pearl of Africa does best, wild forest, wild water and genuine warmth.

Good to Know
  • Visa & entry: Most nationalities need a visa for Uganda, easily obtained as an eVisa online before travel; an East Africa Tourist Visa is also available if you are combining Uganda with Kenya and Rwanda. A passport valid for at least six months with blank pages is required, and a yellow fever vaccination certificate is mandatory for entry. We confirm the exact process for your nationality and help arrange the eVisa where needed
  • Currency: The currency is the Ugandan Shilling (UGX); US dollars are widely accepted for tourism, park fees and tips (bring clean, newer notes dated 2013 or later). Cards are accepted in Kampala, Entebbe and larger lodges, but carry cash for markets, craft stalls, tips and rural areas. ATMs are available in Kampala, Entebbe and major towns
  • Best time to visit: Uganda is a year-round destination, but the two dry seasons, June to September and December to February, are ideal for gorilla and chimpanzee trekking and game drives, with easier forest trails and better wildlife viewing. The wetter months (March to May and October to November) are lush, green and quieter, with fruiting forests that can bring primates lower and closer
  • Language & etiquette: English is the official language and is widely spoken, alongside Luganda, Swahili and many local languages; a few words of greeting are always warmly received. Ugandans are famously friendly, warm and welcoming. Dress is casual but modest, especially in villages and towns, and it is polite to ask before photographing people
  • Getting around: Touring is by private 4x4 safari vehicle with your own expert driver-guide, with some long but scenic drives on a mix of tarmac and rougher park roads; scenic domestic light-aircraft flights to airstrips near Bwindi, Queen Elizabeth and Murchison Falls can shorten long transfers and are easily arranged. Roads can be slow, so we plan realistic days
  • Health & trekking: A yellow fever certificate is required, and antimalarial prophylaxis is strongly recommended, as is comprehensive travel insurance. Gorilla and chimpanzee trekking involve hiking on steep, sometimes muddy forest trails at altitude, so reasonable fitness, sturdy waterproof boots, gaiters, a rain jacket and gardening-style gloves are advised. Porters are available and warmly recommended to support local communities
  • Permits & wildlife rules: Gorilla and chimpanzee trekking require permits that are strictly limited and must be booked well in advance; we secure these for you as part of your journey. On a trek you spend a magical, closely regulated hour with the primates, keeping a respectful distance, wearing a mask where required, and following your ranger's guidance at all times. There is a minimum age of 15 for gorilla trekking
  • Safety & power: Uganda, the warm and welcoming Pearl of Africa, is a rewarding and generally safe destination for travellers, and we use trusted guides and lodges and follow official guidance at all times. Power is 240V with UK-style type G three-pin plugs, so bring an adapter; lodges in remote areas may run on generators or solar with limited charging hours, so a power bank is useful
FAQs

Frequently Asked Questions

Do I need rafting experience for the Nile at Jinja?

No experience is needed. The rafting companies at Jinja are highly professional, with expert guides, safety kayakers and full briefings, and they cater to complete beginners as well as seasoned rafters. You can choose a route that suits your appetite for adrenaline, from big Grade V rapids to gentler family-friendly stretches, and there are always calm sections in between to float and swim. You should be a reasonable swimmer and in good health. It is one of the safest and most exhilarating ways in the world to experience whitewater, on one of the planet's great rivers.

Can I combine gorilla trekking with softer adventures if I prefer?

Absolutely. While this itinerary highlights whitewater rafting, Jinja offers a full spectrum of activities, and we can tailor the mix to your taste. If big rapids are not for you, we can substitute a gentle source of the Nile sunset cruise, stand-up paddleboarding on calm water, quad-biking through villages, a coffee tour, or riverside relaxation. The gorilla trek in Bwindi remains the centrepiece either way. Just let us know your preferences and fitness, and we will design the perfect balance of thrill and calm for your journey through Uganda.

What meals are included?

Daily breakfast is included, along with any meals named in the itinerary; at remote safari lodges and forest camps most stays are full board, so lunches and dinners are typically included there, while in Entebbe, Kampala and towns we often leave some meals free for you to explore. Ugandan food is fresh and hearty, from grilled tilapia and Nile perch to matoke, groundnut stews, tropical fruit and excellent local coffee, and we recommend the best places to eat at every stage.

Are the tours private or in a group?

Your journey is private by default, with your own expert English-speaking driver-guide and private 4x4 safari vehicle, giving you flexibility, depth and a pace tailored to you; small-group and lodge-based options can be arranged if you prefer. Uganda's knowledgeable guides and forest rangers bring the gorillas, chimpanzees, savanna wildlife, birds and rich culture vividly to life, and the private vehicle means you can linger at every sighting.

Do I need a visa for Uganda?

Most nationalities need a visa, easily obtained as an eVisa online before travel, while an East Africa Tourist Visa is available if you are combining Uganda with Kenya and Rwanda. We confirm the exact, current requirements for your nationality, advise on the best option, and help arrange the eVisa where needed. A passport valid for at least six months and a yellow fever vaccination certificate are required for entry.

Is Uganda safe to visit?

Uganda, warmly known as the Pearl of Africa, is a friendly and generally safe destination for travellers, renowned for the warmth and hospitality of its people, and travel here is rewarding and smooth. We continuously monitor conditions, use trusted local guides, rangers and lodges, and follow official guidance at all times. As anywhere, we advise sensible precautions with valuables, and your driver-guide is with you throughout to ensure a safe and relaxed journey.

When is the best time to visit?

Uganda is a year-round destination, but the two dry seasons, June to September and December to February, are generally best for gorilla and chimpanzee trekking and game drives, with easier forest trails. The wetter months are lush, green, quieter and beautiful, and fruiting forests can bring primates closer, so they have their own rewards. We advise on the best timing for your interests, whether primates, big game, birding or scenery.

Can the itinerary be customised?

Absolutely. We can adjust the balance of gorillas, chimpanzees, savanna safari, the Nile, mountains and lakes, add nights at Bwindi, Kibale, Queen Elizabeth, Murchison Falls, Lake Bunyonyi or Jinja, include a second gorilla trek or a Rwenzori climb, extend with Rwanda or Kenya, and tailor the pace, comfort and focus to you. Every itinerary is a flexible starting point for your ideal journey through the Pearl of Africa.
