Highlights

Trip Highlights

  • The poignant battlefields and memorials of Gallipoli are a moving highlight of this journey. On the Gallipoli peninsula, where the Dardanelles meet the Aegean, one of the most poignant campaigns of the First World War unfolded in 1915, and today the quiet, beautiful landscape is dotted with cemeteries and memorials that draw visitors from around the world, above all from Australia and New Zealand. You visit ANZAC Cove, Lone Pine and Chunuk Bair, walk the trenches and battlefields, and reflect at the moving memorials where the fallen of both sides are honoured with grace and reconciliation. The history and poignancy are deeply moving.
  • The legendary walls of Troy, immortalised by Homer, are a fascinating highlight of this journey. On a windswept mound above the plain near the Dardanelles lie the ruins of Troy, the city of Homer's Iliad, where legend places the ten-year siege, the wooden horse and the heroes Achilles and Hector. Excavations have revealed nine cities built one upon another across four thousand years, and you explore the massive ramparts, the ramp and gate, the ruins of temples and houses, and the layers of this legendary place, with a giant wooden horse recalling the famous ruse. Walking where myth and history meet is captivating.
  • Ancient Ephesus, the best-preserved classical city in the Mediterranean, is a spectacular highlight. On the Aegean coast, Ephesus was one of the greatest cities of the ancient world, a Greek and Roman metropolis of a quarter of a million people, and today its marble streets are the most complete and evocative in the Mediterranean. You walk the grand Curetes Street past temples and fountains, stand before the magnificent two-storey facade of the Library of Celsus, sit in the vast Great Theatre where Saint Paul once preached, and take in the terraced houses of the Roman elite with their frescoes and mosaics.
  • The white travertine terraces of Pamukkale, beneath Roman Hierapolis, are a breathtaking natural and historical highlight. Pamukkale, meaning cotton castle, is one of the most extraordinary sights in Turkey, a hillside of dazzling white travertine terraces formed over millennia by mineral-rich thermal springs cascading down the slope like frozen waterfalls, filling with pools of warm turquoise water. Above the terraces spread the extensive ruins of Roman Hierapolis, a spa city of the ancient world, with its great theatre, colonnaded streets, temples and vast necropolis, and the antique pool where you can swim among fallen marble columns. The beauty and wonder are breathtaking.
  • Atmospheric Aegean towns and villages bring the region vividly to life between the great sites. Beyond its ancient wonders, the Aegean is a region of great charm. You pass through the seaside town of Canakkale on the Dardanelles, gateway to Troy and Gallipoli, explore the harbour and bazaar of Kusadasi, and might wander the atmospheric old Greek village of Sirince in the hills above Ephesus, with its stone houses, fruit wines and lively market. You savour fresh Aegean seafood and meze, olive oil and figs, and the relaxed rhythm of coastal life. The charm and flavours are delightful.
  • Above all, this journey follows three thousand years of history through the ancient heart of the Aegean, fascinating and moving. Western Turkey is one of the richest archaeological landscapes on earth, and this journey follows its greatest sites. Over seven days you reflect at the poignant memorials of Gallipoli, explore the legendary walls of Troy, walk the astonishing marble streets of Ephesus, and marvel at the white terraces of Pamukkale and Roman Hierapolis, guided by experts who bring three thousand years of history vividly to life and warmed by Turkish hospitality. The combination of legend, classical grandeur.

Good to Know
  • Visa & entry: Many nationalities need a visa for Turkey, quick and easy to obtain as an e-Visa online before travel, while a number of countries enjoy visa-free entry for short stays; a passport valid for at least six months beyond your arrival date is required. Requirements can change, so we confirm the exact process for your nationality and arrange the e-Visa where needed
  • Currency: The currency is the Turkish Lira (TRY); cards are widely accepted in hotels, restaurants and larger shops in Istanbul and the tourist regions, but carry cash for the bazaars, small cafes, taxis, tips and rural areas. ATMs are plentiful, and exchange offices (doviz) offer competitive rates in the cities
  • Best time to visit: April to June and September to October are the loveliest seasons across most of Turkey, with warm, sunny days ideal for Istanbul, Cappadocia and the ancient sites; July and August are hot and perfect for the Turquoise Coast beaches but busy and very warm inland, while winter is quiet, cool and atmospheric, with occasional snow dusting the fairy chimneys of Cappadocia
  • Language & etiquette: Turkish is the language, and English is widely spoken in hotels, tourism and the main sights; a few words of Turkish are always warmly received. When visiting mosques, dress modestly (cover shoulders and knees), remove your shoes, and women should cover their hair with a scarf; mosques close to visitors during the five daily prayer times, and we plan around these
  • Getting around: Distances in Turkey are large, so our itineraries use quick, inexpensive domestic flights (for example Istanbul to Cappadocia or the coast) alongside comfortable private transfers and touring in air-conditioned vehicles with expert local guides. Istanbul itself is best explored on foot, by tram and by ferry across the Bosphorus, which we help you navigate
  • Health & safety: Turkey is a welcoming, hospitable and rewarding country to travel in, and the main tourist regions are well set up for visitors; we monitor conditions and follow official guidance. Drink bottled or filtered water, use sun protection in summer, and take normal city precautions with valuables in crowded bazaars. No special vaccinations are usually required for standard tourist travel
  • Culture & customs: Turkey is famous for its genuine warmth and hospitality; you will often be offered a glass of tea (cay), and haggling is expected and enjoyed in the bazaars. A traditional Turkish hammam (bath) is a wonderful experience, and Turkish cuisine, from meze and kebabs to fresh seafood and baklava, is one of the world's great food cultures. During Ramadan, many locals fast in daylight, though restaurants and sights stay open
  • Power & practicalities: Power is 230V with European-style type C and F two-pin plugs, so bring an adapter. Tipping (around 10 percent) is appreciated in restaurants and for guides and drivers. Turkey spans Europe and Asia and keeps a single time zone; the pace is relaxed and friendly, and travel here is smooth, rewarding and full of colour
FAQs

Frequently Asked Questions

Do I need to be a history buff to enjoy this journey?

Not at all, though history lovers will be in heaven. Our expert guides bring three thousand years of legend and history vividly and accessibly to life, from Homer's Troy and the poignant story of Gallipoli to the everyday life of Roman Ephesus, so the sites become gripping human stories rather than piles of stones. The journey is also full of natural beauty and charm, above all the extraordinary white terraces of Pamukkale, so there is wonder and beauty alongside the history for every traveller.

Can I bathe in the pools at Pamukkale and Hierapolis?

Yes. At Pamukkale you walk barefoot across the dazzling white travertine terraces and can bathe your feet in the warm, mineral-rich turquoise pools that fill them (footwear is removed to protect the terraces). Above, at Hierapolis, you can swim in the famous antique pool, a warm thermal spring where fallen marble columns and ancient masonry lie on the pool floor, a magical experience. Bring swimwear and a towel. Your guide advises on the best spots and the current arrangements at the site.

What meals are included?

Daily breakfast is included, along with any meals named in the itinerary (typically a welcome dinner and, on cruises or remote stays, half board). Turkish cuisine is one of the world's finest, from spreads of meze, grilled kebabs and fresh Aegean seafood to gozleme, pide, sweet baklava and endless glasses of tea, and we usually leave lunches and most dinners free so you can explore, recommending the best local restaurants and meyhanes at every stage of your journey.

Are the tours private or in a group?

Your journey is private by default, with your own expert local guide and air-conditioned vehicle, giving you flexibility, depth and a pace tailored to you; small-group and shared options can be arranged if you prefer. Turkey's knowledgeable guides bring the mosques, palaces, ancient cities, bazaars and landscapes vividly to life, greatly enriching every visit, and domestic flights keep the long distances quick and comfortable.

Do I need a visa for Turkey?

Many nationalities need a visa, quick and easy to obtain as an e-Visa online before travel, while several countries enjoy visa-free entry for short stays. We confirm the exact, current requirements for your nationality, advise on the best option, and help with the e-Visa where needed, so entry is smooth. A passport valid for at least six months beyond arrival is required.

Is Turkey safe to visit?

Turkey is a welcoming, hospitable and rewarding country, and the main tourist regions, Istanbul, Cappadocia, the Aegean and the Turquoise Coast, are well set up for visitors and very used to international travellers. We continuously monitor conditions, use trusted local guides and drivers, and follow official guidance at all times. Normal city precautions with valuables in crowded bazaars are sensible, and the famous Turkish warmth makes travel here a genuine pleasure.

When is the best time to visit?

April to June and September to October are ideal across most of Turkey, with warm, sunny, comfortable days perfect for Istanbul, Cappadocia and the ancient sites. July and August are hot and best for the Turquoise Coast beaches and gulet cruising, while winter is quiet, cool and atmospheric, with snow sometimes dusting the fairy chimneys of Cappadocia. We advise on the best timing for your interests and the regions you wish to see.

Can the itinerary be customised?

Absolutely. We can adjust the balance of Istanbul, Cappadocia, the ancient sites of the Aegean and the Turquoise Coast, add a hot-air balloon flight or a gulet cruise, include Gallipoli, Troy, Bodrum or the beaches, upgrade to boutique cave hotels and luxury resorts, and tailor the pace, comfort and focus to you. Every itinerary is a flexible starting point for your ideal journey through beautiful and fascinating Turkey.
